Four minor girls were allegedly married off by their families in a secret ceremony in Ghajuna village of Rajasthan’s Bhilwara district, India, on February 23.

According to local media, the girls, aged between two and 12, are all siblings — three sisters and a cousin — tied the knot with boys their age.

The incident came to light after the brides’ uncle Kupa Rawal raised the alarm and reported their parents to police, providing photographs of the ceremony as evidence.

“If they are married off young, their future is at stake. The children get caught in a backwardness they cannot escape,” Mr Rawal said.

So far, two men, allegedly the girl’s fathers, were arrested under the Child Marriage Act.

Surendra Kumar Mishra, station in-charge of Bhilwada, commented on the case: “We ran to arrest the men involved as we heard about it, but they had gone missing.

We could only get them after four days. The maximum punishment they might have to serve is a fine of 100,000 Indian Rupees (N297.540) and three to four years in prison.”

Since a police case has been registered against the family members of the girls, child rights activists are now planning to annul all the four child marriages that took place.

Child brides tipycally don’t live with their husbands until they reach puberty and the four are now with their mothers while police monitor them.
