The party would hold it national convention on that day in Port Harcourt, Rivers state and new national officers would be elected.
This was contained in a communiqué issued by Sheriff and party secretary, Prof. Adewale Olapido after the party’s NEC meeting.

“NEC approved the setting up of four special committees in preparation for the National Convention. They are National Convention Committee, Reconciliation Committee, Zoning Committee and Finance Committee,” the communique read.
Sheriff added that the NEC approved the extension of the tenure of office of all organs of the party at all levels until the conduct of congresses and national convention, with the exception of Edo and Ondo states.
Sheriff was appointed as the new acting national chairman of the PDP on February 16 and his appointment has been strongly criticised.
Constitutionally, the tenure of Sheriff and other national officers of the party was to terminate at the end of March and in anticipation of this, the party had, before the assumption of office of Sheriff, fixed March 19 for its national congress.
