The evil Islamic State terror group has carried out a cross border raid on the North African country of Tunisia.

The country’s prime minister, Habib Essid, says Islamic State militants carried out Monday’s huge raid on Ben Guerdan that killed 55 people in an attempt to control the town and expand their territory.

Dozens of militants stormed through the border town of Ben Guerdan on Monday, attacking army and police posts and triggering street battles during which troops killed 36 fighters.

Essid said officials were still investigating whether the group of 50 militants had infiltrated across the frontier from Libya, though officials found three caches of arms, explosives and rockets in Ben Guerdan after the attack.

Essid said the militants murdered one internal security force member in his own home and that three civilians and 14 security personnel were also wounded.

“The [security forces’] reaction was rapid and strong. We won a battle and are prepared for any others,” Essid said.

The attack was one of the worst in Tunisia’s history and followed three major Islamic State assaults last year, including gun attacks on a museum in Tunis and a beach resort in Sousse that targeted foreign tourists.

Libya has devolved into a bloody civil war after a revolution, which toppled the country’s long-term dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

After Gaddafi was killed, various armed groups vied for control of the oil rich nation leading to the country becoming carved up by various factions, including ISIS which controls an area centered on Gaddafi’s home town of Sirte.
