The umbrella organisation for Northern youths, the Arewa Youth Leaders’ Forum, pleads for the Shi’ite Muslims of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria detained by the Nigerian military to be pardoned and released.
The group issued a joint statement signed by Isah Ocheja and Jonah Ali, who are respectively the forum’s president and general secretary.
An apology was voiced by the group for the December incident in Kaduna state, whereby the life of chief of army staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, came under threat after IMN members obstructed the movement of his convoy.
The statement contains a pledge that the released IMN members will not engage “in further acts of terrorism”.
The group further plans to reach out to Nigerians through the National assembly and traditional leaders explaining why children must not be indoctrinated or radicalised to the point of joining terrorist movements.
Reacting to videos of Shi’ite leaders calling for retaliation against officials, the forum noted in its statement that it is unacceptable and condemnable that disgruntled elements are still threatening violence against innocent members of the state.
A few days ago, IMN members took to Kaduna state streets demanding release of Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, their leader, his wife and other members of the movement, who have been detained since the December Shi’ite-Nigerian Army clash.
