About a year ago, six people lost their lives in a boat mishap while on an assignment to monitor the Presidential and National Assembly elections at one of the Riverine areas in Epe local government Lagos state.

AMBSAM Foundation, in association with Epe community has concluded plans to immortalize the six victims. The victims were Prince Olakunle Adewale, Muiz Bello, Agoro Samson, Wale Mogaji, Mogaji Gbolahan and Tunde Salawu.

The foundation’s name was coined from the last names of these victims. The event is slated to be formally launched on March 28, 2016.

Otunba Tunde Abass, a member of the Board of Trustee of AMBSAM, who spoke on behalf of the other members of the foundation, said the main objective of the foundation is to immortalize the victims and see to the needs of their immediate dependents while briefing journalists at Alausa, Ikeja.

According to him, “The foundation will be used as a spring board to alleviate the sufferings of those other less-privileged and vulnerable youths in Epe division and beyond. A committee has been set up to collate the statistics and present it to the Board of Trustees for consideration.”

Fund mobilisation committee

Otunba Tunde Abass had stated the basic requirements to fuel the initiative. He said an operational framework has been put in place. The foundation had set up a fund mobilization committee with the responsibility to source for the required funds from the public and philanthropists.

“The foundation shall be run on financial donation and grants from government at all levels, philanthropists, public spirited individuals, non-governmental organizations. The success story is that in the last few months, the response had been very encouraging and the start-up was made possible because of financial support received from members,” he added.

Beyond the launching of the foundation, Otunba Abass stated that AMBSAM has made plans that would sustain the long term goals of the foundation, adding that programmes such as learning, economic empowerment, and social awareness would be inculcated into the scheme.

“There is a plan to have a memorial park with a state of the art swimming pool accessible to members of the community whereby they can learn how to swim. This memorial park will be in the name of the fallen heroes,” he had said.

Recently, Mrs Bolanle Ambode made a trip to Epe local government area of Lagos. The . She called for the enforcement of strict rules regarding water travel in Lagos.

About 500 fake life-jackets have been confiscated from various boat operators within the metropolis.
